Our Story

Bloom School was founded in 2011 by Margaret Ellison, a third-generation florist from Melbourne whose family has been working with flowers for over seventy years. Growing up in her grandmother's flower shop on Chapel Street, Margaret developed a deep love for the craft long before she could reach the counter.

After completing a diploma in horticulture and spending several years designing arrangements for high-profile events across Australia, Margaret noticed a gap in the market. Aspiring florists in regional and rural areas — or those balancing work and family commitments — had few options for formal training. The idea for a correspondence-based floral design school took root.

What began as a single fundamentals course mailed to a handful of students has grown into a fully accredited institution offering four distinct programs to learners in more than thirty-five countries. Despite that growth, the heart of Bloom School remains the same: making professional floral design education accessible to anyone with a passion for flowers, no matter where they live.

Our Teaching Philosophy

At Bloom School, we believe that great floral design is built on three pillars: personal feedback, practical skills, and creative confidence. Every lesson we create is designed to develop all three.

Our tutors provide thoughtful, individualised critiques of every practical submission. We do not use automated grading or generic responses. When you send in a photograph of your arrangement, a qualified floral designer reviews your work, highlights what you have done well, and offers clear guidance on how to refine your technique. This one-on-one dialogue is the cornerstone of our teaching model.

We also place a strong emphasis on practical skills that translate directly to the real world. Our course materials walk you through sourcing flowers from wholesale markets, conditioning stems for maximum vase life, pricing your services, and managing client expectations. These are the details that separate a hobbyist from a professional, and we cover them thoroughly.

Finally, we encourage creative exploration at every stage. Floral design is an art form, and while mastering the fundamentals is essential, finding your own voice is what will set you apart. Our programs include open-ended projects that invite you to experiment with colour, texture, and form — and our tutors are there to support you as you discover your signature style.
